the presidential contenders are today. president obama off the campaign trail, spending the day at the white house. just over an hour from now, governor romney attends a rally in the battle ground state of virginia. the latest "real clear politics" poll average shows the president holding a very slim lead over governor romney in a head-to-head matchup. four years ago, president obama won that state. 13 electoral votes up for grabs in virginia with 270 the magic number needed to win but last night all eyes were on kentucky, home of the only vice-presidential debate this time around. the faceoff between vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan got combative at times. the vice president raising eyebrows openly laughing, grinning, often interrupting his challenger, a display many republicans called disrespectful. with so much on the line both men got in their jobs. >> romney is a good man. he cares about 100% of americans in this country. and with respect to that quote, i think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way. [laughter]
the presidential debate and what obama does and how romney performs. this was full of. it is fun to talk about but i don't think it will move one iota in the polls. ashley: you agree with that so let's move it forward to the presidential debate. we saw joe biden become a lot more aggressive. do you expect that from the president and is there a line he must cross that could really turn the focus? >> the president will get more aggressive and he is going to observe the line since it is a town hall debate with real people you can only go so far when you are with an audience and when your opponent is walking around. he is going to try to clarify the differences in a way that joe biden also did last night. tracy: when clarifying differences you point out in your analysis how a lot of people say this election is just a statement on the belief system between the role you when your government to provide. are we zeroing in and having an understanding with each candidate is bringing to us? >> we're about to see what each candidate is bringing to the table. next week's debate will be do or die. obama bet

. we will save president obama doing that very quickly. >> in the vice presidential debate tonight, is this going to be relevant? do people really care who the vice presidential debate winner is and what will you be looking for tonight? >> i think think there should be a disclaimer across the tv screen. thisthis is for entertainment purposes only and will not affect the election, unles first of all, she let's say it's even smaller than the last one interestingly enough looking back. palin and biden got a bigger audience than the first obama mccain debate because people were so fascinated with sarah palin. this probably will not get 67 people but let's say it gets 40 million or 50 million. it's still a lot of eyeballs and i think what you will see biden do is go naftzger ryan's record in some of the budget proposals in the ryan plan and say that is the real romney. now we are figuring out that is what he will do. it will be interesting to watch how ryan pivots off that and says no, those were my ideas. a basically your ideas don't work and that is why the economy is where it is. >>
that the democratic base wanted barack obama to be in his first presidential debate. the answer to your question really is, did he push the envelope too much? and i would say he did not push the envelope too much. i've been taking phone calls for the last two hours from a lot of folks who were in the gop base and they think that he did. i find it interesting that they're not saying anything about his substance. >> all right. ann, let me bring you in. you're far too beautiful for michael toll ever pull off anything close to you. let me bring you in on this. it's the truth. i want to talk about the medicare. we had high anticipation of whether or not the 47% comment would come up. it did in fact. what the showdown over medicare would look like between these two men. let me play one of the exchanges, ann. >> what we're saying is, no changes for anybody 55 -- >> what mitt romney is proposing -- >> the kinds changes we're talking about for younger people like myself is don't increase the benefits for wealthy people as fast as anybody else, slowly raise the retirement age over time. >> look, these guy
